Record pencil price
Well, congratulations to whoever won the pencil sketch at Heritage's last auction. Maybe it was the large size (roughly 19" x 19"), but whatever it was, someone felt it was worth paying US$13,750 for it -- almost what some finished pieces have sold for in the not to distant past. Pencils continue to grow in their popularity, possibly due to what we've discussed here before: the fact that pencil sketches are closer to original pieces than prints, even those that are numbered and signed by the artist. In any event, I suspect this one set an all time record for price! -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

Heritage Auction Nagel now on reserve
As you know, the Heritage auction is occurring on April 23. If you're a registrant on the site, you can get updates on pieces you're following. Also, Heritage allows you to bid on pieces before the auction, which primes the bidding pump for the actual auction. Today, an odd thing occurred (as these things go): The Nagel acrylic not only posted its current bid update, it also noted a reserve price for the piece. Previously, there was no reserve price listed. Not sure what this signals. Maybe seller panic? -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

The Barry Hahn not-Nagels at Heritage: NEW DESCRIPTIONS
So Heritage has updated the items' description as follows: Barry Haun was Patrick Nagel's assistant and often worked with the artist to complete works. These examples were created after Patrick Nagel's death by the Haun for Mirage Editions. Still worth it? -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

The Barry Hahn not-Nagels at Heritage 7
On April 23, 2024, three pencil/ink drawings are up for auction, but they're not by Patrick Nagel. At least not enough by Patrick Nagel according to Heritage Auctions. They correctly list the artist as Patrick's assistant, Barry Hahn, even though his name is actually Barry Haun. As you can see from the attached screen cap, all three pieces have minimum bids -- and the auction is still three weeks away. Question: Is the inking work of an assistant really collectible? Especially if these aren't even finished pieces? If you're among those who would bid on these pieces, what's your thinking on this? I can understand a pencil sketch by Patrick Nagel himself, even if it weren't signed. I still don't understand the purchase of Nagel's unsigned illustrations for department store ads, but at least those were done by the artist himself. Anyone want to explain this phenomenon? -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

Barry Hahn, not Patrick Nagel, at Heritage 14
In the upcoming April, 2024, there are three pieces created by Barry Hahn, Nagel s assistant, after Nagel's death. Interesting to see what happens with them: Barry Hahn was Patrick Nagel's assistant and often worked with the artist to complete works. Errors in Nagel: The Art of Patrick Nagel 3
Hey folks! Is anyone keeping a list of errors in the Nagel book? I've found several and I'm not sure if they're just new to me and others have spotted them previously or if I'm breaking new ground here. 1. Shades, page 154. Doesn't list any SIS even though I KNOW they were produced because I've owned some. 2. Collector's Gallery (large), page 148. Says 130 s/n however mine is x/90. What others do you know of? Does anyone have a master list of some kind?

Is anyone still buying serigraphs off of Craigslist? 11
I used to scan Craigslist nationally for Nagel pieces and picked up a few in collectible condition. That hasn't happened for the last couple of years. Most pieces are not what I consider collectible and those that might qualify are too suspicious (quality wise) to pursue. So the supply seems to have dried up. The only purchases I've made over the last few years has been people who have contacted me directly. Is anyone buying off Craigslist these days? I know that some people are on their actively seeking to buy. -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

Commemorative 11 serigraph question/info (model with short hair) 2
A young friend of my sister's family has this serigraph on his wall. Knowing that I am fan of Nagel, she asked him about it. He stated in seriousness, it was his mom. Am interested in info on this model. Note, I am aware Nagel also used some composites, which may be the case for this piece. Any info is appreciated. Reply directly as desired, so as not to spam the group. However, Nagel trivia is always interesting. Thanks. Stow

"Black Robe" 45/90 5
Greetings: On the heels of my last post, here's -- literally -- a great illustration of what I mean: I happily procured 45/90 of Black Robe this morning from a private party. It's beautiful, pristine and clean as a whistle. Gallery framed, with just a few tiny nicks in the black lacquer, but nothing a well-placed Sharpie can't hide. She's also way larger than I recalled. Not only was the condition great, the price was, too. There's no way I could have scored this one online or from an auction house. -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

The Nagel Inflection Point 4
Greetings: If you buy, sell, collect or admire the work of Patrick Nagel, please take a moment to read this. The market of Nagel's work has clearly had a great run, and from what I can tell, continues to do so. However, market conditions have altered the landscape in a number of ways that you may or may not be aware of -- or even agree with. Here are some observations: First, you may be interested to know that other than my first purchase of Karl Bornstein's collection, I have not purchased any more pieces from local auction houses in the years since. The main reason for that is that I've discovered, time and again, that local auction houses simply don't have the expertise to distinguish true conditions or even authenticity of the pieces they consign. Too often, the pieces are plagued with issues the auctioneers may not recognize or prefer not to disclose. I even found one local auction house (from which I am personally banned) blatantly selling forged signatures and damaged pieces with absolutely no hesitation. Okay, you'd think that would be enough. But now, due to both estate sales from original owners (who have died) and a terrible economy in which people are forced to sell for cash, the game has really changed. Many of the estate pieces coming up for auction have been improperly stored or displayed. If you haven't had the opportunity to inspect them up close, you might never see the dirt, grime, foxing, rips, tears, fading and other damage that don't show up clearly in the auctioneers' photographs -- until after your check has cleared. On top of that, local auction houses rarely, if ever, take the time to authenticate the pieces that fall into their hands. For that, reason, I might think about buying a piece from a reputable auction house (Bonhams, Christies, Sothebys) but I'd never buy from most others, especially locals. Where, then, would I purchase pieces? You're looking at it. I'd buy from real people whose standards are as high as my own. This list, for example, is mostly composed of serious Nagel admirers and collectors who generally put their money where their mouths are. These are people you can meet and talk to, who also know that if anything should go south, you'd hear about it loud and clear right here. Finally, as predicted, the number of damaged/uncollectible pieces and downright frauds continues to escalate. So be careful out there and really look before you leap into a local auction house. Interested to hear remarks/experiences from others. -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

Nagel? Really?
If I didn't see our own Monica's name in the copy, I'd have never guessed this was a genuine Nagel, but there ya go: you learn something every day. This Playboy original art coming up for auction on November 17, 2023 in New York (and online). Talk about a departure! Heritage auction results 11
Well, I'd never have believed it, but today, two unsigned pencil sketches went on the block at Heritage auctions for way more than some signed, limited edition serigraphs often command. Maybe some of you can explain it: -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

One acrylic on baord, two pencils at Heritage 9
Greetings: Seems like a while, but on October 6, Heritage is auctioning three Nagel pieces (below). Two pencil sketches and one original illustration on board. Bidding is open as of today. Not sure how to call this one. From my viewpoint, the market appears to be very quiet, but I just may be missing the action. A few houses are listing collectible serigraphs, but I'm not seeing much else. Thoughts? -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel

Larry Flynt's "Carol" Bronze up for auction 4
Looks as if the bronze sold for $4250. I imagine that's not the hammer price (which would add another 20% -- 25%), but even if it is, that's a very reasonable price for a bronze that is in good -- not perfect -- condition. Congratulations if you were the winner! -- Rob Frankel The Artist Who Loved Women The only biography of Patrick Nagel
